About rock carvings in RDR2
Rock Carvings are 10 ancient petroglyphs hidden on rock faces and boulders around the map, tied to Francis Sinclair's stranger mission "Geology for Beginners". Sinclair lives in a shack just past Strawberry, on the road toward Lake Owanjila, and greeting him starts the chain. As with dinosaur bones, you do not need to return to him after the first meeting — each carving can be mailed from any post office once you find it. Sinclair sends a reward after your first carving, another partway through, and mailing all 10 unlocks a final invitation to visit him again, where he gives you the Old Brass Compass, an ingredient needed to craft the Raven Claw Talisman at a Fence. None of the 10 carvings are missable, and they can be collected in any order at any point in the game, including after the epilogue.
